The Old Fisherman

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out patients at the clinic. One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. "Why, he's hardly taller than my eight-year-old," I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled body. But the appalling thing was his face-lopsided from swelling, red and raw.

Yet his voice was pleasant as he said, "Good evening. I've come to see if you've a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this morning from the eastern shore, and there's no bus 'til morning." He told me he'd been hunting for a room since noon but with no success, no one seemed to have a room. "I guess it's my face...I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments..."

For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: "I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning." I told him we would find him a bed, but to rest on the porch. I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. "No thank you. I have plenty." And he held up a brown paper bag.

When I had finished the dishes, I went out on the porch to talk with him a few minutes. It didn't take a long time to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a back injury.

He didn't tell it by way of complaint; in fact, every other sentence was preface with a thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going. At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children's room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the little man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, haltingly, as if asking a great favor, he said, "Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment? I won't put you out a bit. I can sleep fine in a chair." He paused a moment and then added, "Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don't seem to mind."

I told him he was welcome to come again. And on his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As a gift, he brought a big fish and a quart of the largest oysters I had ever seen. He said he had shucked them that morning before he left so that they'd be nice and fresh. I knew his bus left at 4:00 a.m. and I wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us.

In the years he came to stay overnight with us there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden. Other times we received packages in the mail, always by special delivery; fish and oysters packed in a box of fresh young spinach or kale, every leaf carefully washed. Knowing that he must walk three miles to mail these, and knowing how little money he had made the gifts doubly precious. When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning. "Did you keep that awful looking man last night? I turned him away! You can lose roomers by putting up such people!" Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice. But oh! If only they could have known him, perhaps their illness' would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude to God.

Recently I was visiting a friend who has a greenhouse, As she showed me her flowers, we came to the most beautiful one of all, a golden chrysanthemum, bursting with blooms. But to my great surprise, it was growing in an old dented, rusty bucket. I thought to myself, "If this were my plant, I'd put it in the loveliest container I had!" My friend changed my mind. "I ran short of pots," she explained, "and knowing how beautiful this one would be, I thought it wouldn't mind starting out in this old pail. It's just for a little while, till I can put it out in the garden."

She must have wondered why I laughed so delightedly, but I was imagining just such a scene in heaven. "Here's an especially beautiful one," God might have said when he came to the soul of the sweet old fisherman. "He won't mind starting in this small body." All this happened long ago- and now, in God's garden, how tall this lovely soul must stand.

Ghost Caught On Cam?

Pretty soon, the Chinese the world over will celebrate 'yue lan' festival, or hungry ghost festival, which will continue for a month! To usher this festival, I've found an interesting video, not like the rest, purported showing a ghost caught on film. Whether its real or not, I don't know. But its an interesting viewing experience.

Strange Animal -the geo ducks

They are certainly strange looking animal, and they are a type of clam, not duck as the name suggest. Treat them with respect. They'll outlive any of you - they get up to 160 years old . It's the second longest-living organism on Earth (after giant tortoises, which can live almost 200 years). As they grow, they accumulate rings on their shell, much like a tree does.

Abnormal sleep patterns in women linked to stroke

Sleep patterns in middle-aged women can increase their risk for stroke. The greatest increase in stroke risk (70 percent) was found among women who slept 9 hours or more per night.

A recent study looked at more than 93,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79. After following the group for an average of 7.5 years, the researchers found that women with a sleep duration of 6 hours or less, 8 hours, or 9 hours or more increased the risk of stroke by 14 percent, 24 percent, and 70 percent, respectively, compared with sleeping 7 hours.

Analysis also suggested that the adverse effect of long periods of sleep was not associated with frequent snoring or sleepiness. This means that a sleep pattern which is longer or shorter than the norm could be an independent risk factor for stroke.

Strange Grave ...

Florence Irene Ford Born: September 3, 1861 Died : October 30, 1871

Ten-year-old Florence died of yellow fever. During her short life she was very frightened of storms and whenever one rolled-in she would rush to her mother to find comfort.

Upon her death her mother was so struck with grief that she had Florence’s casket constructed with a glass window at the child’s head. The grave was dug to provide an area, the same depth of the coffin, at the child’s head, but this area had steps that would allow the mother to descend to her daughter’s level so she could comfort Florence during storms. To shelter the mother during storms, hinged metal trap doors were installed over the area the mother would occupy while at her child’s grave.

In this picture you can see the trap doors behind little Florence’s tombstone, which covers the stairway her mother used. They can still be opened today. In the mid 1950s a concrete wall was erected at the bottom of the stairway covering the glass window of Florence’s coffin to prevent vandalism. Kinda strange and spooky, eh?

Parasitic Twin Growing Inside Girl's Chest

The little girl kept complaining about pain in her chest
and it wasn't from eating too many chili dogs at a
baseball game. During exploratory surgery, doctors
in New Delhi, India discovered the 6-year-old girl had
a jaw growing in her chest. The jaw was putting pressure on the girl's heart and lungs, causing her much pain.
It was eating her alive! Sorry.

According to Dr. Yogesh Kumar Sarin, who headed the operation, "It must have been growing inside the child since she was born. It had well-developed teeth and even a tongue." Sarin went on to explain that the condition, known as Incomplete Twinning, happens when a few growth cells remain in a person's body after birth. Had it not been detected, the jaw could have continued growing for up to 30 years and become cancerous.

No details on if that means it would have grown into a whole head, or a huge whale-like mouth or why the HELL someone wouldn't notice this inside you for 30 years, say for example if your chest started yelling at you one day for having too many blankets on at night.

Hey! Anyone see "Alien"?

**************************************************************************

The Rat
Your charm, charisma and leadership will continue to open doors in 2008, as it has in the past years. People look up to you, don't let them down. An opportunity in business will present itself this year. Take it. This will reward you many times over. However, this opportunity will not manifest itself through the traditional channels. The Rat must have his or her eyes and ears alert. Keep one's mind open to new ideas, for they shall be fruitful in the future.

Romantically, the Rat must work to rekindle his or her relationships with loved ones. Your innate character and personality always causes you to neglect this area of life. This year especially you must strive to continue to make these relationships work. If you don't all the money in the world will not make you whole.

One last note. This being the year of the Rat, good luck shall bless you...if you let it. The Rat has always had the tendency to "screw up a good thing." So lay back, flow with life around you. Don't try to impose your will on everything you touch. If you allow yourself to relax, a fortunate Rat you shall be.

The Ox
The Ox is a stalworth of fierce determination and willpower. This will be employed to the fullest in 2008. Many projects will be started and many will be completed in the following years. These will be from (in general) the house and one's place of employment. The Ox shall be prepared for many long arduous days followed by the eventual collapsing from energies spent.

Do not be discouraged Mr. Ox!! You shall be rewarded for your sweat!! Good fortune will cast it's friendly eye upon you! People will take notice of your hard work, and reward you thusly, so do not be discouraged!!

However (there is always a however!) try not to overwork one's self. Do not neglect your family for promotion. One drawback to the Ox's personality is his (or her) inability to keep all parts of life in balance. Keep constant tabs from one's spouse or significant other, so they may not feel neglected. If advice is followed this shall be a banner year for the Ox.

The Tiger
The Tiger's gusto, bravado and drama shall be on full display in 2008. For better or worse you shall be the center of attention, particularly at your place of employment. My advice is to be careful you Tigers. The limelight is an intoxicating place to inhabit, but can quickly turn to bright in a hurry. Once you have fallen out of favor with coworkers, spouses and family, it is a difficult journey to redeem yourself.

Be careful, keep a balance. It is difficult for the Tiger to not be the center of attention, the center of the universe. But a little humility, a little levity can go a long way with one's personal relationships. Try to keep your ego tamed this year. If you keep things in check, I say an 7 out of 10 on the happiness scale awaits you in 2008. However, if you allow that Tiger go unchecked, well...it'll be a long year. Watchout!!

The Rabbit
The Rabbit's talents of diplomacy and politics shall be called upon in 2008. You will be asked to resolve many disagreements throughout the year. Siblings and loved ones will ask your council and advice in areas of unresolved conflict, particularly of money and interpersonal relationships.

You will happily oblige and in doing so, will act as the glue that keeps the family together, centered and happy. Rabbits take an innate pleasure in acting as the medium between people. But you shall also be looked upon favorably among family and friends. And, in doing so, you will occupy a seat of honor and respect with those around you.

All in all the Rabbit shall have a happy, fulfilling and contented year. A perfect 10!!

The Dragon

The luckiest and most envied of the Chinese Zodiac Signs, you will have much good fortune in 2008.

Your energy and magnetism will draw people toward you. You will have many happy social gatherings and events to attend this year. For single Dragons, you will have bountiful opportunities to find a "significant other." Essentially, you will have your pick of mates in 2008. My suggestion is to try to find someone who compliments your personality and character.

These "opportunities" may prove a problem to the partnered and married of the Dragons this year. The thought of wandering eyes may present itself to you. My advice is to quell this before you act upon your urges. This path never never leads to anything good in the long run.

Try to rekindle your long term relationships with loved ones instead, this year. For it is in this area that you will find true happiness and joy. And, once a solid foundation is layed, it is much easier to accept the luck and fortune that follows the Dragon.

Financially, this year shall be like most others for the Dragon. You will always have just the correct amount of resources needed in your life. Do not worry if hardship appears on the horizon. For it shall take care if itself. Remember you are a part of the most fortunate of the Chinese Zodiac Animal Signs and ladyluck will always appear to pull you out of difficult situations. You shall be blessed with an above average year in 2008.

The Snake
One of the most intelligent of the Chinese Astrology Signs, you will be challenged this year. But don't be discouraged! Read on!! Snakes love a challenge, you excell when competition arises. Is is here that you shine brightest!!

And shine you shall!! For 2008 will bring challenge on an epic proportion. Never before in your life will you be given so many puzzles to solve. So many hurdles to overcome.

Starting at work or place of employment bosses and higher ups will test your skill and resolve by issuing many projects with short deadlines. But do not be discouraged!! If completed on time and to your highest of standards many rewards shall follow. Keep your eye on the ball and good fortune shall befall you. You are on the fast track!! Don't let off the petal!!

These tests shall drain your energies at home. Loved ones, partners and spouses shall become discouraged by your absence and seemingly absent-mindedness. Try as you will, spats and arguments shall ensue. My advice is hold on!! Once tested and passed by your employers, promotions shall follow and everything shall settle down on all fronts. A strong year awaits you, but with a rainbow at the end!! Prepare for a wild ride.

The Horse
One of the most successful of the Chinese Zodiac Signs, this year will be very rewarding for the Horse. Opportunities a plenty will crop up throughout the year. To the average person they may not seem very productive or popular, but to the Horse, you can see the inherent value of these situations presented. The Horse has the innate ability to look at life from a different angle, from "outside the box." You will be financially rewarded by your hard work, insight and determination. A perfect 10 year awaits you!!

The Sheep
The Sheep is considered the most artistic of the Chinese Zodiac Signs. This year you will seek fulfillment within your private life. A more relaxed and introspective lifestyle will allow a reflection of habits you may have formed in the past. Reviewing these habits you will be better able to discern the positive and negatives of your lifestyle. Through meditation and a deeper understanding into yourself, you will be able to drop these poor habits in your life and thusly a better more well rounded, centered and happy person shall be born. Through the balancing of your yin and yang as well as your strong elements, you will be more at peace with yourself and those around you. This truly is a year of unparalleled growth for the Sheep. Be ready for much soul-searching, for the answers to your life will be presented in 2008!!

The Monkey
The Monkey has always been known as the joker of the Chinese Zodiac Animal Signs. You absolutely love to antagonize the people around, whether at home or at work, everyone has to keep an eye on you. However, know when it is time to stop. Everyone likes a prankster in their lives from time to time, but go overboard and you may be on the outs with the important people in your life. This is especially true this year, as some of your "targets" may have had enough of your antics and take revenge on you. My advice is try to reign in your complusions a little.

The Rooster
Good luck and much fortune shall befall the Rooster in 2008. Your hard work and positive outlook on life shall be rewarded with many new friends, much happiness and general good feelings!! Cherish this time, it will bring warm memories later in life. This is the year you will reflect on later in life, as the year you reviewed bad habits and poor decisions and replaced them with a more relaxed, positive outlook. An uplifted person you shall become. Loved ones and acquaintance's alike shall seek your company, so they can bask in your energy. This truly shall be an uplifting year for the Rooster

The Dog
The Dog shall be blessed with many new friends and acquaintances in 2008. At your place of employment, people will seek out your council in important matters of life in general. You are wise in these areas and will freely give your advice.

Good relationships shall continue with loved ones and new friendships will commence with people whom you may not have held in high regard in the past. However, for this to happen the Dog must keep an open mind to new relationships. If this advice if followed this shall be a rewarding year for the Dog.

The Pig
And last but certainly not least is the loyal Pig. You know many many people who call you their friends. You are looked upon as a rock of stability among your peers and will continue to be seen as such in 2008. Your advice is always asked of, and well taken. People heed your warnings if you feel they are traveling down the incorrect path in life.

That being said, choose speech and actions carefully, especially in 2008. A passing compliment or criticism given may seem as just a moment in time to you. However to the appointee, this will be taken immediately to heart. Words stated literally or symbolically will be heard, accepted and followed by those around you. My advice? Choose your words and actions wisely, and a fortunate and happy year you shall have.

Strange and bizarre food!

These pics came in the mail as usual. Can't validate whether its real. Judge for yourself.

To Put It Simply, I Want You

by Iloveit
I want to be your companion
and walk hand in hand,
your strength enveloping mine.
Autumn leaves falling,
scuffing feet and laughter,
sharing nights, not finished by the dark.

I want to be your confidant
as you pen your deepest
thoughts, as your heartaches
bleed and finally break free.
Your dreams, I keep as if my own.
I want to smile as you smile
and giggle with you
at nothing at all.

I want to be your lover
and find the passions
that move you to action.
I want to be the softness
that induces you to trust.
I want to be the naughty
that makes you come back for more.
I want to please you.

I want to share your breakfast
and your dinner,
I want you in the shower
and in your bed and
with soft steps to bring you coffee
(I take mine black)
Your strong arms, the legs
that power your thrust,
your lips of pleasure,
these are the fuel of my desire

no it is no secret, my love,
and to put it very simply,
I want you.

Ready For Love

by Ruth Kephart
Take my hand and lead the way;
tell me all you want to say.
Whisper softly in my ear,
all those things I want to hear.
Kiss my lips and touch my skin;
bring out passions deep within.
Pull me close and hold me near;
take away my pain and fear.
In the darkness of the night,
be my beacon, shine your light.
In the brightness of the sun,
show me that you are the one.
Give me wings so I can fly;
for I can soar when you're nearby.
Enter my heart, break down the wall,
it's time for me to watch it fall.
I've been a prisoner, can't you see?
Break my chains and set me free.
Strip me of my armor tight;
you'll find I won't put up a fight.
Release my soul held deep within . . .
I'm ready now, let love begin.

Sweet Romantic Things to Do for Your Sweetheart

By Kathryn D'Imperio

1. Leave little love notes or piles of candy when you visit each other. Stash them away where your honey will be sure to find them, whether in the car, under his/her pillow or in a travel bag.

2. Call just because you are thinking of him or her leave a cute message in the voicemail or send a text message with a sweet or seductive meaning. If you prefer to leave a message as opposed to talking, call when you know he or she is unavailable so a little something sweet is waiting upon return to the cell phone, home or office.

3. Send an email, or better yet, get old-fashioned and send a letter or a card through the mail to express your love. After all, who doesnt love getting mail (well, except for bills!) as a surprise?

4. When you are getting together for an evening or even for just a few minutes, pick up his or her favorite treat or snack, a specialty coffee or dessert as a sweet surprise. If you are going to rent a movie or spend some quiet time at home, get a few snacks to enjoy with a flick or some television.

5. Speaking of renting movies, surprise your sweetheart with a movie you pick out that you know he or she would really enjoy. I often have a difficult time making up my mind about which movie to rent, so it would definitely be a huge but much appreciated step if I brought one over that I knew he would like.

6. You know those sweet things you think of when you are together or just thinking about your honey? Well, next time a thought pops in your mind, voice it! Girls especially love to know what wonderful things go on in the inner workings of their guys minds, so chances are, guys may also enjoy a few catch phrases.

7. When you spend time together, help each other out with chores to free up more time to spend together. Sometimes lending a hand can even be fun when you are both working together.

8. Swap massages, or simply give your partner a massage if you get the idea that he or she has had a long day. Foot massages and back rubs can do wonders for relaxing people and alleviating stress. Many males seem to enjoy having their backs gently scratched or rubbed softly as a means of helping them to relax.

9. Bring home take-out from a favorite dining establishment after a long day so the two of you can enjoy some food in the comfort of your own home. It isnt quite as romantic as cooking it yourself, but it is definitely a nice gesture.

10. Pick wildflowers or give a single rose or carnation for no reason. I even found a four-leaf clover once to give to my sweetheart.

12. Do something you may not want to, simply because it is important to him or her. This can be anything from attending a show or an event to doing a chore, giving up a bad habit or just trying something new. Find out what is important to him or her if you dont already know, and make it happen.

13. Spend time with his or her family. The seriousness of a relationship can sometimes be gauged by how one interacts with his or her partners family. Spending time at your honeys familys home can also serve to strengthen your relationship.

14. Spend extra time getting readydress up or wear something that you know your sweetheart loves to see on you.

15. Snuggle up and take a nap together. There is nothing quite like falling asleep and waking up in the arms of the one you love.

16. Play romantic music and dance together. Slowly dancing around the room to a favorite song can mean so much more when it is completely unexpected.

17. Go on a picnic! Gather your favorite foods, drinks and desserts, a comfortable blanket and some utensils, plates, cups and napkins and head out for the park on a beautiful day. Go for a walk in the park while you are there and enjoy all of the nature around you.

18. Carry his or her photo in your wallet. Keep your sweetie present at all times by putting a photo of him/her or the two of you together in your wallet, at work, in your car or wherever you think you would most like to see it.

19. Bring your sweetheart to visit places you came to know and love in your childhood. Parks, playgrounds, the zoo, pumpkin patches, museums, amusement parks, beaches, boardwalks and any other attractions that you enjoyed as a child can bring back happy memories to share with your significant other.

20. Share your daydreams. Whatever makes your heart soar at thoughts of the future, consider sharing those ideas with your special one. Daydreaming together can be a very romantic and emotional experience, whether it is fully in jest or in a degree of serious contemplation.

21. Spray a little bit of your perfume or cologne on his or her pillow. You will be on each others minds to begin with, but the lingering scent after you have gone separate ways for the night will bring sweeter dreams than usual.

22. Send romantic ecards to your sweetheart. If you are already intimate, send sensual ecards!

Pomegranate Top Healthiest Fruit Juice

On The Early Show Saturday, Health magazine contributor and clinical nutritionist Samantha Heller talked about what makes the juices healthy.

The study took into account the antioxidant levels of the juices.

Basically, Heller says, anything with a vivid color, like most berries, will be high in antioxidants, so it's no surprise berry juices landed in most of the top 10 slots.

There's always the danger, she points out, that when we tell people something is healthy for them, they'll go out and drink it by the gallon.

The truth is, you consume a lot of calories with juice. No-sugar-added doesn't necessarily mean no sugar at all. And sugar, even though it's naturally-occurring sugar, can really pack on the pounds if you consume too much.

Among the top ten healthiest juices:

Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate is the healthiest of them all because it contains the most of every type of antioxidant. It wins in all categories. And it's thought that it might do some very good things; it may protect against some cancers, such as prostate cancer. It might also modify heart disease risk factors, and it could be healthy for your heart. So pomegranate was the clear winner.

Concord Grape Juice

Concord grape juice is a source of very potent antioxidants. And there's some research indicating it may be good for our hearts and also help reduce blood pressure. Grapes are also high in fiber, but much of their goodness is in the seed, so you need to consider whether grape juice is the way to go.

Blueberry Juice

The color alone indicates a lot of antioxidants. But blueberry juice also contains tons of fiber, and is also very high in Vitamin C. One of the qualities of antioxidants is that they can lower inflammation, and so there's some indication that blueberries may have some effect on age-related cognitive abilities. And don't forget that blueberries are very low in calories.

Black Cherry Juice

This one actually has scientists a bit excited. Not only is it high in antioxidants, but there is evidence that black cherry juice can actually diminish exercise-induced muscle injuries.

Cranberry Juice

Like all of these juices, it's high in antioxidants. But cranberry juice is also high in Vitamin C. And there's always been a sort of wives' tale that cranberry juice helps prevent urinary tract infections. Well, it turns out researchers are finding evidence that it actually can decrease the number of urinary tract infections. The thinking is, it helps stop bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall, protecting against infections.

Tofu 'may raise risk of dementia'

Eating high levels of some soy products - including tofu - may raise the risk of memory loss, research suggests.

The study focused on 719 elderly Indonesians living in urban and rural regions of Java.

The researchers found high tofu consumption - at least once a day - was associated with worse memory, particularly among the over-68s.

The Loughborough University-led study features in the journal Dementias and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders.

Soy products are rich in micronutrients called phytoestrogens, which mimic the impact of the female sex hormone oestrogen.

There is some evidence that they may protect the brains of younger and middle-aged people from damage - but their effect on the ageing brain is less clear.

The latest study suggests phytoestrogens - in high quantity - may actually heighten the risk of dementia.

Lead researcher Professor Eef Hogervorst said previous research had linked oestrogen therapy to a doubling of dementia risk in the over-65s.

She said oestrogens - and probably phytoestrogens - tended to promote growth among cells, not necessarily a good thing in the ageing brain.

The Brick

A young and successful executive was travelling down a neighbourhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down

when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown The angry driver

then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against

a parked car shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?" The young boy was apologetic. "Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do," He pleaded. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop...." With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. "It's my brother, "he said "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up."

Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."

Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. "Thank you and may God bless you," the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy! push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: "Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!" God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our choice to listen or not.

Thought for the Day:

If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.

If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it.

He sends you flowers every spring.

He sends you a sunrise every morning Face it, friend - He is crazy about you!

Send this to every "beautiful person" you wish to bless.

God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way.

Read this line very slowly and let it sink in....

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

World's strangest looking animals

Matamata Turtle

matamata

The mata mata inhabits slow moving, blackwater streams, stagnant pools, marshes, and swamps ranging into northern Bolivia, eastern Peru, Ecuador, eastern Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern and central Brazil. The mata mata is strictly an aquatic species but it prefers standing in shallow water where its snout can reach the surface to breathe.

Pelochelys cantorii (Cantor's giant soft-shelled turtle)

Pelochelys_cantorii

The turtle is found primarily in inland, slow-moving fresh water rivers and streams. Cantor's giant soft-shelled turtles can grow up to 6 feet (about 2 meters) in length and weigh more than 100 pounds (about 50 kilograms).

Patagonian Cavy (Mara)

Patagonian_Cavy

A large rodent that looks sort of like a rabbit, sort of like a donkey. The Patagonian Mara lives in Central and Southern Argentina. Maras inhabit arid grasslands and scrub desert

Saiga Antelope

saiga

Saiga is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN. There is an estimated total number of 50,000 Saigas today, which live in Kalmykia, three areas of Kazakhstan and in two isolated areas of Mongolia.

Star nosed mole

star_nosed_mole

The Star-nosed Mole lives in wet lowland areas and eats small invertebrates, aquatic insects, worms and mollusks. It is a good swimmer and can forage along the bottoms of streams and ponds. Like other moles, this animal digs shallow surface tunnels for foraging; often, these tunnels exit underwater.
The incredibly sensitive nasal tentacles are covered with almost one hundred thousand minute touch receptors known as Eimer's organs.

Elephant shrew

elephant_shrew

They are widely distributed across the southern part of Africa, and although common nowhere, can be found in almost any type of habitat, from the Namib Desert to boulder-strewn outcrops in South Africa to thick forest.

Long-beaked echidna

echidna

Echidnas are one of the two types of mammals that lay eggs (the other one is platypus). The long-beaked echidna is found in New Guinea, where it is widespread.

Pink Fairy Armadillo

pink_fairy_rmadillo

It is found in central Argentina where it inhabits dry grasslands and sandy plains with thorn bushes and cacti. It has the ability to bury itself completely in a matter of seconds if frightened.
The Pink Fairy Armadillo burrows small holes near ant colonies in dry dirt. It feeds mainly on ants and ant larvae near its burrow.

Long-eared Jerboa

Watermelon May Have Viagra-Effect

A cold slice of watermelon has long been a Fourth of July holiday staple. But according to recent studies, the juicy fruit may be better suited for Valentine’s Day.

That’s because scientists say watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels and may even increase libido.

“The more we study watermelons, the more we realize just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body,” said Dr. Bhimu Patil, director of Texas A&M’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center in College Station.

“We’ve always known that watermelon is good for you, but the list of its very important healthful benefits grows longer with each study.”

Beneficial ingredients in watermelon and other fruits and vegetables are known as phyto-nutrients, naturally occurring compounds that are bioactive, or able to react with the human body to trigger healthy reactions, Patil said.

In watermelons, these include lycopene, beta carotene and the rising star among its phyto-nutrients – citrulline – whose beneficial functions are now being unraveled. Among them is the ability to relax blood vessels, much like Viagra does.

Scientists know that when watermelon is consumed, citrulline is converted to arginine through certain enzymes. Arginine is an amino acid that works wonders on the heart and circulation system and maintains a good immune system, Patil said.

“The citrulline-arginine relationship helps heart health, the immune system and may prove to be very helpful for those who suffer from obesity and type 2 diabetes,” said Patil. “Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it.”

While there are many psychological and physiological problems that can cause impotence, extra nitric oxide could help those who need increased blood flow, which would also help treat angina, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems.

“Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra,” Patil said, “but it’s a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects.”

The benefits of watermelon don’t end there, he said. Arginine also helps the urea cycle by removing ammonia and other toxic compounds from our bodies.

Citrulline, the precursor to arginine, is found in higher concentrations in the rind of watermelons than the flesh. As the rind is not commonly eaten, two of Patil’s fellow scientists, drs. Steve King and Hae Jeen Bang, are working to breed new varieties with higher concentrations in the flesh.

In addition to the research by Texas A&M, watermelon’s phyto-nutrients are being studied by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service in Lane, Oklahoma.

As an added bonus, these studies have also shown that deep red varieties of watermelon have displaced the tomato as the lycopene king, Patil said. Almost 92 percent of watermelon is water, but the remaining 8 percent is loaded with lycopene, an anti-oxidant that protects the human heart, prostate and skin health.

“Lycopene, which is also found in red grapefruit, was historically thought to exist only in tomatoes,” he said. “But now we know that it’s found in higher concentrations in red watermelon varieties.”

Lycopene, however, is fat-soluble, meaning that it needs certain fats in the blood for better absorption by the body, Patil said.

“Previous tests have shown that lycopene is much better absorbed from tomatoes when mixed in a salad with oily vegetables like avocado or spinach,” Patil said. “That would also apply to the lycopene from watermelon, but I realize mixing watermelon with spinach or avocadoes is a very hard sell.”

No studies have been conducted to determine the timing of the consumption of oily vegetables to improve lycopene absorption, he said.

“One final bit of advice for those Fourth of July watermelons you buy,” Patil said. “They store much better uncut if you leave them at room temperature. Lycopene levels can be maintained even as it sits on your kitchen floor. But once you cut it, refrigerate. And enjoy.”

Common Cooking Spice Shows Promise in Combating Diabetes and Obesity

Turmeric, an Asian spice found in many curries, has a long history of use in reducing inflammation, healing wounds and relieving pain. Since inflammation is believed to be involved in onset of both obesity and Type 2 diabetes, researchers examined the effect of the herb on diabetic mice.

They discovered that turmeric-treated mice were less susceptible to developing Type 2 diabetes, based on their blood glucose levels and their glucose and insulin tolerance tests. They also discovered that turmeric-fed obese mice showed significantly reduced inflammation in fat tissue and liver compared to controls.

Curcumin, the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant ingredient in turmeric, may lessen insulin resistance and prevent Type 2 diabetes in these mouse models by dampening the inflammatory response provoked by obesity.
